I was with Turning point in Gillingham when I first heard about AIR Sports Network, I was a single mum with a heroin habit, I was fed up, didn't leave the house and had nothing to do. I was struggling with everything, then I went along to a boxercise session. It took a lot to go along, I don't usually do well with groups and at that time I didn’t feel good about myself, I found it really hard to talk to people and didn't ever socialise. I was also angry, I didn't like being like this but I had nothing to help me deal with it. When I came to the sessions, I began to see changes in myself, I was less stressed and getting fitter and felt healthier. I was opening up as a person at last.
AIR Sports Network has helped me realise that I had to get off my butt and do something for myself, I’d done nothing for a long time and it had made me feel down and depressed and bored. Going to the sessions makes me feel good, it’s got me talking to and meeting other people and it’s got me out of the house. At the sessions its like a big family, we encourage each other and support each other and swap banter and have a good laugh whilst working out.
This little change in attitude has really helped me, its’ helped me make new friends and its’ helped me cut down on alcohol and drugs use. I’m getting there and feel I'm enjoying life. In the short term I want to find a job which the staff are helping me with and long term to get off medication for heroin and eventually to have a happy life.
I would say to anyone to go for it with the programme, its helped me really feel better about myself, its made me positive and less depressed, its given me focus and now I know I can achieve things and get on in life. It can be hard work, but stick with it and it will make you feel much better physically and mentally.
